New Fiction Submission Guidelines

The focus of Darwin's Evolutions is to provide works built upon a solid bedrock of storytelling. We are not a literary market, although a good story with literay finesse is a jewel. We are not a partisan outlet encouraging a specific group, sub-group, or political demographic to "raise their voice", although a good story that accounts for and addresses societal concerns can have added depth.

The primary word is "story". There has to be one in a fiction submission if you want to sell to us.

Our preferred length is less than 10k words, with 5k being optimal. However, feel free to submit longer stories if you believe they have merit. We ask that you be aware, however, that the bar for acceptance for longer stories will be much higher.

Our editorial staff ascribes to the "200 word rule". You get 200 words to hook the reader. If you don't, then your work will most likely be rejected.

As a guideline, within those 200 words there should be characters to care about, a solid feel for the world you have created, and a situation that needs dealt with. Somewhere in the rest of the story, the characters need to deal with their situation through dint of their own efforts and, by the end, they need to have learned something or grown somehow.

That is our working definition of a "story".

Activist fiction, i.e. fiction that is written from the go to preach a specific social, political, or religious point of view, is not welcome at this publication. Much can be forgiven for a good story, but good stories rarely come from demagogues.

The genres we seek can best be described as broad-band science fiction and fantasy up to and including slipstream, elements of horror, romance, whatever. Please keep the gore out, the sexual innuendo and language PG-13, and your submission will be welcome.

No fan fiction.

We offer $0.0125 per word for new fiction with a minimum payout of $20. For this investment, we expect the rights to publish your story in multiple electronic prose formats and in audio form within the body of the periodical itself and to keep the piece available as part of our magazine archives for a period of one year after publication.

We do not pay royalties. Any additional payout will be via on-line tips.

The copyright of the work always belongs to you. After one year in our archives, you may choose to leave the story there in the hopes of it garnering extra attention and income or take it down at your discretion.

Releases go "out of print" after a single contributor pulls an included story from the site.

Please note that all donations directed to an author will be issued to the author by their preferred payment method out of Evolutions. There will be no "surcharge" deducted from your tip income by Evolutions.

Selection for our "Year's Best" anthology will be determined by tip receipts for individual stories. If tip receipts are insufficient to decide, then a general poll of the forum community will be conducted.
